I've been feeling very sorry for myself recently as I missed not one but two of my hair appointments for my colour. No ones fault...just plain unlucky with the way the last two lockdowns fell. I am now sporting blonde tips rather than highlights they have grown out so much🤣⁠

So I got to thinking about why I was feeling this way from a science perspective. The neural network for what my hair looks like would be amazingly strong because I use it everyday. So I have a very good idea what I look like & don't need to use much energy to bring it to light. ⁠

But now when I look in the mirror my brain says quite literally...what the hell? Five months colour free is quite a difference so my poor brain has to use more energy as it's blonde neural network is not able to fire as strongly as it did. Now there is a newer weaker network forming - you got it the blonde tipped one! ⁠

Work smart & work with your reward chemicals. Giving yourself an immediate reward after you do the new thing you want to make a habit means your reward hormone Dopamine will be released quickly. This will make it easier for your brain to link the new habit to your natural high which means it will make it easier each time you do it as your brain will 'want' to. ⁠

The mother of all senses 'touch' is the first sense to develop in the embryo.  Science can show us when a mother places a hand over her stomach the baby responds by reaching out to touch the walls of the uterus. 'Safe in the arms of another' is among the most powerful routes to re-establishing an internal sense of well-being right from the beginning of our lives. ⁠

As mammals we are social beings & our nervous systems are made to reflect this. ⁠But in these times of essential social distancing this is challenging, if not actually impossible for many of us. All is not lost though, as we can give our nervous system safe touch by using as many soft tactile objects in my home - throws, plush cushions & even those super fluffy slippers. ⁠

These are all picked up as cues of safety by our nervous system, which triggers the vagus nerve to calm the heart. This is a time when we need to be 'soft' in all senses of the word on ourselves⁠🤗⁠

Anchor a new habit to an existing one. ⁠

I was pretty rubbish at drinking enough water so I started drinking water 3 times a day by always drinking a full glass of water after each meal (breakie, lunch & dinner). This was easier than trying to do it between meals as my mealtimes are some of my most established habits - which means they work on really strong neural circuits. Brains love this as it is very energy efficient so it will feel easier to you as your brain needs less focus & hence less energy to integrate a new habit. ⁠

Micro actions count! Take your goal & break it down into the smallest action you can, then do it for no more than 2mins. ⁠

So say your goal is to eat more veg in 2021 then you could break this down into washing carrots for the dinner while you wait on the  kettle to boil for your morning coffee. That way you won't be overwhelmed with the new task & will be more likely to repeat it as it doesn't take too much of your brain's energy. Soon it will simply be what you do - a habit!⁠
